Femme Fatale

Two new ones from the ladies of the Planet Mu label....Subeena's track with Om'mas Keith is hot and the b-side is sick too.....not really a dubstep track more of an 80's dance anthem but I dig it nonetheless.....The Ikonika original track, Smuck, and remix is what you'd expect from Ikonika; original, laid back, intricate yet simple 8-bit dubstep beats....but thats why we love her......

Selda

Selda Bagcan, simply known as Selda, is probably the most famous Turkish psych-folk singer and arranger you'll ever know. During the 1970's Selda was a political activist in Turkey all the while releasing a slew of records on the Turkuola label in Turkey. Until recently she had not seen critical acclaim, but the re-release of this 1976 gem by Finders Keepers Records (Andy Votel & Dom Thomas) reserected this long dead LP. You will deifinetly recognize the riffs and sounds of "Ince Ince" because Madlib sampled it on one of his albums and gave the beat to Mos Def for the Ecstatic release earlier this year. It is also featured on a Grand Theft Auto and Skate 2 commercials that air frequently on television. This is a must have for any psychedelic folk fan and a must have for anyone interested in good music. I have been listening to this on repeat for almost 5 months now or whenever school started again.....download it ASAP

Dam-Funk

So for the 80th posting I chose my favorite funky dude and his European Nights.....released only on Stones Throw European tour as a CDR, Eurpean Nights provides a integral look into the Modern-Funk sound. The Toeachizown installments are finally over.....all EPs are out and the LP is available everywhere as a double CD set and soon in vinyl. There are four tracks on this release featuring Dam at his all time best and of course I had to share.....No explaination needed....

Royce Da 5'9''

I was skeptical about Royce's solo efforts before I listened to this album. I had heard of Royce prior; him being featured on Black Milk's latest endeavor and forming a friendship with Eminem in the late 90's and a brief stint as a duo under the title Bad Meets Evil. One of their tracks, Renegades, was used by Jay-Z several years later. Interesting story.....I knew he had some skill how much blew me away. He chose some of the illest producers and beatmakers to help with this album and includes BIG collaborations with Busta and Bun B. I think this is one of the better hip-hop albums of 2009 and that is saying a lot cuz people are doing it big in 2009. Cop this amazing beats and lyrical content is on point......trying to live up to the promises of the poll and y'all want hip-hop and psychedelia so here is hip-hop......more goodness to come.....

Brackles

For some reason I heave been really feeling Brackles lately. Maybe its because most of the people I know who are into dubstep have this biased view of the genre, especially in the U.S., that its all wobbles and wonks care of Rusko, Caspa, 16 Bit and Skream but in reality its a multi-faceted entity. Brackles brings a more sensible side of the sound. More like U.K. garage than dubstep but still has that deeper dubstep appeal. Mary Anne Hobbs is a huge Brackles fan and slowly I have become one too...I only have these two EPs, one of which features a track with Brackles collaborator Shorstuff, but I am looking forward to his new full length to pop up soon on Planet Mu.......

Egyptian Lover

Since the Arabian Prince link got blocked I decided to post one of his colleagues in the soulsonic sound game aptly name Egyptian Lover.....All these soulsonic funk guys love the Middle East and Africa and Egyptian Lover is obviously no exception...and although this album was released in 1984 and the blog is the best of NEW music from around the world this sound and album was way ahead of its time and is slowly becoming relevant again in the hip-hop, dance and underground realms of funk, disco and boogie. Music always goes in cycles; as far as trends in popular music and equally in underground music....so here we are 2009 enjoying albums that were released while we were in the womb or nursing...anyways great production on this album awesome vocals and lyrical content is rather quirky and, although cheesy, the album cover is sick.....look up pictures of him now.....big contrast hahaha....

Andy Votel

Andy Votel's first compilation for Fat City Recordings stands out as one of his best and most vibrant of releases. Rare edits and breaks from the U.K., U.S., Hungary, Germany and Turkey. These are some of Votel's favorite tracks and he has compiled it beautifully. He is a master curator and collector of rare and forgotten sounds and recordings and is not afraid to share these gems with the world. One of my favorite compilations of his to listen to and I just recently have collected them all and this first one still stands out as best....
